In 2005 Katrina struck New Orleans and the Gulf Coast bringing the heartbreak of the plight of people and animals into all of our living rooms. Many of our colleagues with the gumption, resources, and availability went the disaster zone struggling against all odds to rescue, shelter, and reunite as many pets as possible that people were forced to abandon during the evacuation.
Stuck here in the Mid-West and feeling helpless, the Pet Tenders Foundation launched a NoPetsLeftBehind PETITION drive to allow the public to express its will and a resource website to help people respond better to future emergencies. In researching for the website, we were amazed to find a wealth of resources available for both Emergency Planners and Animal Guardians.
The planning had been done, but apparently “planning” and “doing” are still world’s apart…
Many of the links to specific resources have changed in the intervening years, but all of the following organizations still provide excellent information for those who care.
And in keeping with our Foundation’s Mission, we have also started a list of links to resources for animal guardians who wish to plan for the lifetime care of their animals when they are no longer able to provide it themselves. We welcome suggestions for additional resource links.
